For many South Africans, the prospects of employment, education and life abroad seems to be an attracting force that is increasing in strength every day. However, very few residents consider and understand the tax implications of changing residency, and the difference between legal and tax residency. This course is the first in our two-part tax residency series, and aims to clarify the concept of tax residency, to assist taxpayers in applying it appropriately. Please note that while these courses are presented as a series of related matters, they cannot be booked as a bundle and bookings are to be made for each course on its own. DISCLAIMER: Neither ProBeta Training nor the presenter is registered as a tax practitioner, and the purpose of this course is to convey important legislative and practice information that relate to the matters covered in the content. We do not hold any of the information in our courses out to be formal or expert tax advice or opinions. Please take note that tax residency remains a highly specialised field, and it is advised that formal advice be obtained from a tax advisor or practitioner before making a final decision on your tax affairs.

This session will cover the following: • Distinguishing between “legal”, “excon” and tax residency • Effective timing of becoming and ceasing to be tax resident • The base costs when commencing residency and the exit taxes upon ceasing to be tax resident • Declaring a change in residency to SARS and obtaining a Tax Compliance Status Pin, including the supporting documents required and the eFiling functionality • The impact of emigration and changing tax residency on the withdrawal of lump sums, including the latest tax amendments from SARS and National Treasury • The exchange control regulations for transferring funds to a foreign country (applicable to residents and non-residents)

All taxpayers who have ceased tax residency or intend to do so, and tax professionals assisting them with their tax affairs.
