To successfully assess a trainee in terms of their proficiency as a prospective CA (SA) or AGA (SA) under the CA2025 Competency Framework, there are 5 key role players that will have a part to play in a trainee’s professional development:

1. Trainee – Will take the lead in their own development, carrying out technical work and documenting evidence demonstrating their proficiency.

2. Reviewer – Who works most closely with a trainee on their day to day technical work assignments, and is therefore primed to be able to give feedback as the reviewer is often on hand to witness a trainee’s daily work activity. Reviewers give formative feedback in the Learning Outcome Review (LOR) document.

3. Evaluator – Who is less directly involved in a trainee’s day to day work activity but plays a mentorship role and is fundamentally concerned with a trainee’s longer-term development. Evaluators offer summative feedback in the Professional Development Summary (PDS) document.

4. Assessor – Similarly to an Evaluator, is less directly involved in a trainee’s day to day. An assessor signs off on the proficiency of trainees as recommended by an Evaluator and is therefore involved in the completion of the Professional Development Summary document. Assessors are qualified CAs (SA) or AGAs (SA) and are required to be registered as assessors.

5. Training Officer – Serves as an overseer for the training program of the training office and is empowered to handle assessment disputes but is typically not directly involved in assessment of a trainee. Training Officers are qualified CAs (SA) or AGAs (SA) and are required to be registered as assessors.

A trainee is to keep tabs on their own demonstration of the competencies and provide the evidence which can later be reviewed, evaluated and assessed by the respective other role-players.

A SAICA Reviewer plays a key role in on-the-job feedback as they usually provide live oversight to a trainee whilst the trainee carries out their daily work assignments, on which they are later reviewed.

The Reviewer is the primary individual in determining whether evidence for learning outcomes can be accepted or not, and what ratings are deemed appropriate.

Aside from the Reviewer, a SAICA Evaluator plays arguably the biggest role in a SAICA trainee’s progression to becoming a CA (SA) or AGA (SA) by tracking, understanding and correcting / remediating a trainee’s development with almost as much desire / interest as the trainee themselves.

The purpose of this training session is to help establish where you, as a Trainee fit in, in the CA2025 Assessment Process and how to appropriately document evidence of demonstrating the respective learning outcomes / competencies in an LOR, as well as how to provide reflection feedback in the PDS document at the end of each PDS cycle, both via the Electronic Assessment Tool or EAT.

A Reviewer will be aided in terms of how to participate in the CA2025 Assessment Process of a SAICA trainee, and how to appropriately provide feedback in an LOR via EAT.

Furthermore, we aim to build you up, as an Evaluator and Assessor, on what your role is in the evaluation and assessment of SAICA trainees, as part of the CA2025 Assessment process, by practically walking you through the completion of a PDS document on EAT.

- Provide an overview of the CA2025 Assessment Process, including
o Change of emphasis in terms of competencies
o What the new competency areas are
- Identify what assessment instruments require the involvement of the
Trainee / Reviewer and Evaluator / Assessor, i.e., the LOR and PDS
respectively.
- Explain how the Trainee / Reviewer / Evaluator / Assessor will complete
the LOR / PDS, for what is relevant to them, including:
o How to handle technical learning outcomes
o The need to accept / reject and validate evidence documented, relating
PVAAs, using SAICA’s quality guidelines
o How to provide an objective rating, using appropriate LOR / PDS
decision trees, respectively
o Which learning outcomes don’t require a rating
- Direct Reviewers / Evaluators when there is disagreement i.e., difference
in rating or evidence rejected
- What the SAICA requirements are i.e., timing deadlines, with regard to
completion of the LOR / PDS
- Practice giving ratings in mock situations
