To successfully assess a trainee in terms of their proficiency as a prospective CA (SA) or AGA (SA) under the CA of the Future (formerly CA2025) Competency Framework, there are 5 key role players that will have a part to play in a trainee’s professional development.
An Evaluator / Assessor is less directly involved in a trainee’s day to day work activity but plays a mentorship role and is fundamentally concerned with a trainee’s longer-term development towards final proficiency levels. Evaluators / Assessors offer summative assessment feedback in the Professional Development Summary (PDS) document.
A SAICA Evaluator / Assessor plays arguably the biggest role in a SAICA trainee’s progression to becoming a CA (SA) or AGA (SA) by:
Tracking a trainee’s development across an assessment (PDS) cycle
Understanding their current level of professional development, and
Correcting / remediating a trainee’s development through the design of a development plan to address development deficiencies
The purpose of this training session is to help establish where you, as Evaluator / Assessor, fit in, in the CA of the Future Assessment Process in the context of needing to assess trainees on their proficiency towards becoming CAs and AGAs (SA).
This session will practically demonstrate how to give appropriate feedback in a Professional Development Summary (PDS) document on the Electronic Assessment Tool (EAT) online platform.
The following will be covered in the session which focuses on the Evaluator / Assessor’s role in the assessment process of a trainee:
An overview of the CA of the Future Assessment Process, including
Its purpose and what the overall process of assessing a trainee looks like
The categories and nature of competencies (learning outcomes) a trainee needs to demonstrate
Comparative Analysis of Competency Frameworks
Overview of the CA of the Future Framework
versus the 2016 Competency Framework
Identification of what assessment instruments require the involvement of the Evaluator / Assessor, i.e., the PDS
Explanation of how the Evaluator / Assessor will complete the PDS, including:
Reflection on the presence and consistency of Learning Outcome Review (LOR) feedback sought by trainee
Overview of the SAICA requirements for Learning Outcome Review (LOR), highlighting common pitfalls for evidence coming from the LOR to the PDS
Evaluation of academic progression with guidance on reflection commentary
Identifying concerns over technical learning outcomes progress with guidance on reflection commentary
Providing objective overall ratings feedback over Professional Values Attitudes and Acumens (PVAAs) learning outcomes
Guidance on how to hatch a development plan where there are development needs
Guidance of Evaluators / Assessors on the procedure for when there is a disagreement in rating or evidence is rejected
What the timing deadlines and frequency of completion of the PDS are
What the latest amendments are to the competencies / competency framework / EAT online platform
Practical demonstration of how to give overall ratings using the PDS decision trees in mock situations
