Reputation, professional identity and making decisions that stand up to scrutiny

Some questionable decisions become easier to recognise when we imagine having to explain them afterwards.

Would I be comfortable explaining this decision to:

  • my manager?
  • the client?
  • SAICA?
  • a regulator?
  • my team?
  • my family?
  • or the public?

This session introduces defensibility as a practical ethical habit.

The aim is not to create fear of scrutiny. It is to encourage trainees to make decisions that are considered, evidence-based, aligned with professional values and capable of being explained transparently.

A real developmental issue: Moving from immediate convenience to long-term professional judgement.

Under pressure, a decision may feel perfectly reasonable because it solves today's problem.

Professional maturity requires another question:

Will this decision still make sense when viewed later, by someone who was not inside today's pressure?

This connects strongly with reputation, transparency, documentation, stakeholder consequences and professional identity

SAICA competency connection

SAICA requires trainees to demonstrate integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour.

The professional-ethics guidance also links trainee conduct to maintaining and enhancing the reputation of the profession.

Professional citizenship similarly emphasises understanding the effect of individual professional actions on both the profession and society, including public confidence and trust.

This session includes:

  • A session journey
  • Practical takeaway resource / tool: The TOMORROW Test

Why a Training Officer would choose this session

This develops an extremely practical habit:

Make today's decision with tomorrow's explanation in mind.

It ties together ethics, accountability, reputation and professional judgement in a way trainees can remember long after the session.
