To successfully assess a trainee in terms of their proficiency as a prospective CA (SA) or AGA (SA) under the CA of the Future (formerly CA2025) Competency Framework, there are 5 key role players that will have a part to play in a trainee’s professional development.

A SAICA Reviewer plays a key role in on-the-job feedback as they usually provide live oversight to a trainee whilst the trainee carries out their daily work assignments, on which they are later rated.

An Evaluator is less directly involved in a trainee’s day to day work activity but plays a mentorship role and is fundamentally concerned with a trainee’s longer-term development towards final proficiency levels. Evaluators offer summative assessment feedback in the Professional Development Summary (PDS) document.

The purpose of this training session is to help establish where you, as Reviewer and Evaluator, fit in, in the CA of the Future Assessment Process in the context of needing to assess trainees on their proficiency towards becoming CAs and AGAs (SA).

This session will practically demonstrate how to accept / reject / rate evidence in an LOR and how to give appropriate feedback or overall ratings in a PDS document respectively on the Electronic Assessment Tool (EAT) online platform.

The following will be covered in the session which focuses on the Reviewer’s role in the assessment process of a Trainee:

  • Explanation of how the Reviewer will complete the LOR, including:
  • How to handle technical learning outcomes
  • How to validate evidence based on SAICA’s documentation requirements
  • When and how to accept / reject evidence for Professional Values and Attitudes (PVAs) related competencies
  • How to provide an objective rating for evidence of [Enabling] Acumens related competencies through a thorough explanation of the decision trees

The following will be covered in the session which focuses on the Evaluator role in the assessment process of a trainee:

  • Explanation of how the Evaluator will complete the PDS, including:
  • Reflection on the presence and consistency of Learning Outcome Review (LOR) feedback sought by trainee
  • Overview of the SAICA requirements for Learning Outcome Review (LOR), highlighting common pitfalls for evidence coming from the LOR to the PDS
  • Evaluation of academic progression with guidance on reflection commentary
